Avis LaFrance

The Talented Avis

A couple weeks ago, we introduced you to Avis LaFrance….and I’m tempted to add “stylist to the stars!” but she is a stylist for the “everyday person” as well. She is the lady responsible for helping Priscilla look so great, and we are delighted to get to spend some time with her today. Several of you posted questions for her and she is generously offering her expertise with us. Here are the questions from that blog post, plus a few of my own!

I most certainly do have a question for Avis! I am struggling in the area of the appropriate style for my age. I am a 36 year old wife/mother of 3 boys and I don’t want to look like a soccer mom for everyday for every event. However, I don’t want to look like some college girl either. I am not a huge “trendy” fan; I am more on the classic end. Plus, my budget doesn’t allow for shopping a lot which is what trendy piece calls for because they go out of style from season to season. Like Priscilla, I would not mind a few trendy pieces. I’ve struggled with leggings and skinny jeans because it makes me look like 8th grade all over again; they look great on others with boots.  I don’t know…..I just need help!!!!!!!

Avis: Whether you are a wife, mother or soccer mom, you can create an age appropriate look that is fresh with impact. Priscilla’s look is what I refer to as eclectic, a mix between trendy and classic. When working with clients, I am usually given a budget. I understand budget constraints, but I have some great news: you can look good on a budget.

When I first introduced Priscilla to leggings she had a grocery list of reasons why she shouldn’t wear leggings. We had a break through last summer and she decided to try leggings. The rest is history she is now a HUGE leggings fan! I challenge you to get out of the box and create a style that is uniquely. Your style is your signature!

My daughter and I were having a serious discussion about close toe high heel shoes. Should this type of shoe be only worn with stockings or can you go without stockings and still wear this type of shoe?

Avis:  Stocking Trends for 2010 are all over the board! Footless tights and leggings should be a part of your hosiery repertoire if you are interested in making a style statement.  Stocking/ pantyhose can be worn with a close toe high heel shoe however, it is not required. This is a matter of preference and what is appropriate for the specific occasion. Mom, generations collide on this issue.

I’m with Bwright!! Hints on how to look age appropriate on a tight budget would be great!! I have a short waist and long legs…the belted look spells disaster for my torso so….any tips are appreciated. 🙂

Avis:  Dressing a short torso can be a challenge. The goal is to choose the right lines to create proportion and balance out your silhouette. Play up your assets and camouflage everything else.

Belts do not work because it emphasizes your waistline. Create the illusion of a longer torso by blurring the location of your waistline. As a stylist, I am an expert in shopping for affordable quality. (Rachel adds: Avis regularly shops stores like Marshalls, TJMaxx, etc to find quality items – woot!)

What is one essential item for fall?

A nice pair of jeans that fit and flatter your body type. Jeans can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

How did you start working with Priscilla?

Several years ago, God laid it on my heart to approach Priscilla about being her Stylist. I reluctantly approached Priscilla but I could not bring myself to say what the Lord had said to me. A few weeks after my disobedience, God had Priscilla call me about working with her on an upcoming video project. I have had the privilege of serving as Priscilla’s stylist every since.

What do you love most about your job?

Avis: I love seeing the person transformed before my eyes. Surprisingly, feeling better about your appearance can motivate you in other areas of your life. I have received numerous testimonies showing the power of the image transformation process, like this one from a client named Cherrie Fisher:

I am so glad you’re inspiring women 40 and up like myself to stay in the game.  I am a mom who works from home and sweat pants had become my M.O.  You helped me to understand the balance between taking care of myself and taking care of others.  We met in April of 2010 and you helped me to do more than just organize my closet.  You helped me to see myself and you taught me how to add a little “spice” to my wardrobe.  Throughout this process, I have lost 17 pounds by exercising and preparing healthy meals for myself and my family.  I now carve out 30 to 40 minutes a day to work out by myself (with weights) and I try to meet up with other like minded women at least once per week so that we can exercise and fellowship together. You have the gift of encouragement and may God continue to bless you in all that you do.

What is the biggest mistake women make when it comes to choosing their wardrobe?

Avis:  I think the biggest mistake women make when it comes to choosing their wardrobe is dressing by habit, impulse, imitation or trail and error. There is freedom in being intentional and making choices that work for your career, lifestyle, personality and aspirations.

What advice would you give to someone on a limited budget?

Avis:  If you are on a limited budget you need to stop shopping by impulse and shop with a purpose. Evaluate where you are and identify the items needed to expand your wardrobe. Create a plan and execute.

What does a consultation with you typically look like?

(1) Client schedules an appointment

(2) Stylist evaluates your wardrobe – on-site or virtually

(3) Stylist discards outdated and unflattering items

(4) Client and/or Stylist accumulates:  purchases items identified during evaluation

(5) Client and Stylist merge existing clothing with new clothing and accessories

(6) Client schedules appointment for seasonal maintenance designed to ensure you stay focused and continue to move your wardrobe to the next level

Thank you so much, Avis! We really appreciate you taking the time to help us out with your talent and expertise! I may just have to try those leggings now….I’m gonna SHOP WITH A PURPOSE!
